European Commission fines Google €2.95B over abusive ad tech practices - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45140730 - Sep 2025 (351 comments)
Beautiful, I yearn for a Google Search that has to make a good product from the perspective of the people searching instead of pumping their advertising arm. Even Google's response to the ruling talks about advertisers instead of users.
How is it going to be funded, though? Users is and always its main product not search results.
I often wonder about this when discussions about breaking up Alphabet come around.
Does Google Search open up Ad placement to different Ad Tech companies?
In which case, wouldn’t the Google Ad Tech business end up being the highest bidder anyway?
Much like they are for the default search engine on Apple products by having the deepest pockets.
